Everything You Need to Know Before Getting a Social Security Card Replacement in Washington State

It seems you’ve lost your Social Security card somehow… Maybe you should have chosen a better object to learn card-throwing with – or maybe you should have aimed farther away from the wood stove. Either way, you’re in need of a replacement. Good news! It’s really not that difficult or time-consuming to procure a new Social Security card. In fact, you could have a brand new one in your hands within 7 to 10 days. Best of all, it’s of no cost to you! But before that, here are some things you need to know:

Your first option is to send in your application online.

In order to apply for a replacement card online using your my Social Security account, it is required that you prove the following:

  1. You are a citizen of the United States
  2. You are at least 18 years of age, with a United States mailing address. APO, FPO, and DPO addresses also count (military bases, diplomatic locations, etc.)
  3. You aren’t requesting any changes to your card; name or otherwise
  4. You have a valid driver’s license or state-issued ID card from any one of the following states: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware (driver’s license only), District of Columbia, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Dakota, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington State, Wisconsin (driver’s license only)

If, however, you do not qualify to get your replacement online, there is still a Plan B:

First, find out which documents you’ll need for your SSA application.

Next, simply complete and print out your finished application.

Finally, you’ll need to hand-deliver or mail your application to your closest Social Security Office.

Don’t Forget:

The documents you provide must be originals, unless a copy is certified by the issuing agency. You’ll need to get your paws on a certified copy of a document that depicts a birth, marriage, or divorce which has taken place in the USA. Photocopies or notarized copies will be refused by the Social Security Administration.

If you intend to send in an application for a separate party, you will also need to supply valid proof of your identity. Along with that, you will also be required to provide sufficient documentation proving your relationship to, or responsibility for that person.

Also keep in mind, there is no reason to pay a third party for a Social Security Card replacement or name-change. These are services the Social Security Administration already offers FOR FREE!

If you live in Vancouver and are unable to send in your application online, feel free to drop it off at your closest Social Security Office.

Our local Vancouver SSA Office (98660) is open from 9am to 4pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. It’s open on Wednesday from 9am to noon, and stays closed on Saturday and Sunday.

You also have the option to deliver your application to one of the offices across the bridge in Portland, which share the same hours as the Vancouver office on Broadway.
